The World’s Top Five Most Spectacular Roofs

The roof is, along with the walls and foundations, one of the three vital components of a building. The covering of the structure and sat upon its walls, the roof provides all-important protection against rain, snow, sunlight and wind, while helping maintain the building’s internal temperature. A roof is more than mere functionality however; it can contribute a huge and spectacular benefit to the aesthetic value of any building, such as Shrewsbury’s spectacular abbey.

Here are the world’s most spectacular roofs:

Florence Cathedral, Italy

Formally known as Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore in its native Italian, this stunning cathedral was built between 1296 and finished in 1436. Its famous dome is the largest brick dome ever constructed and is a visually stunning red which compliments the polychrome marble panels of the basilica’s exterior.

Red Tiled Houses Of Dubrovnik, Croatia

The city of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast is over a thousand years old and boasts incredible orange tiled roofs across the entire city, despite being heavily shelled in the Yugoslavia civil war in the early 1990s. The town’s stunning architecture has become even more famous since its cityscape was used in the TV Game of Thrones as Westeros’ capital, King’s Landing.

Grand Palace, Thailand

This beautiful building was built in 1782 in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. Its ornate roof is stupidly flamboyant and has gold-edged tips that can be seen from across the city.

Sydney Opera House, Australia

The swan-like roof of the Sydney Opera House is renowned across the world for its graceful white lines. Each of the shell-like arches is made from concrete and its construction took over 14 years to complete.

St Paul’s Cathedral, England

St Paul’s Cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was built in 1675 to replace the old St Paul’s Cathedral which burned down during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Its famous dome was captured in an iconic photograph taken during the bombing of London during the Blitz.
