Vinyl And Its Many Uses

What Is Vinyl?

Vinyl is a synthetic material that is created from ethylene (found in crude oil) and chlorine. When processed, these two substances combined form Polyvinyl Chloride resin, also known as PVC.

It was first invented in the 1920s with the intention of making a material that would help make everyday products cheaper, more hard-wearing and easier to construct.

Properties

  • Resistant to humidity and moisture
  • Can be manufactured in many colours, as well as transparent
  • Very cheap to manufacture
  • Strong and durable
  • Easily recycled unlike other plastics
  • Environmentally sound as only 57% of material is common salt
  • Requires less energy to manufacture which means that fewer fossil fuels are used and fewer emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Recorded Music

The phonograph is an analogue sound storage medium that has been manufactured using vinyl since the 1940s. Though phonograph use fell with the advent of the cassette, compact disk and digital technologies, it has been making a comeback in the last twenty years. Every town in Britain including Shrewsbury is selling vinyl!

Electronics

Vinyl is used to insulate electronics, wires and cables and it products any conductors from moisture, dirt and damage.

Packaging

Vinyl is a superb material for packaging because it is sturdy, safe, economical, easily manufactured and environmentally responsible.

Transportation

Vinyl is regularly used in automobiles as an affordable, high-quality and easy to maintain material on things such as upholstery, flooring, electrical wiring and side mouldings.

Flooring

Vinyl has been used for flooring for decades thanks to its strength, durability, cost and ‘wipeability’.
